About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L engines that not only power Caterpillar machines, but also power over 5000 other applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Caterpillar’s company strategy includes sustainability as one of four focus areas and IPSD is engaged and actively preparing green energy solutions for the future.

Job Purpose:

We are currently seeking a Test & Validation Engineer in the IPSD Virtual Product Development (VPD)/Validation team in Mossville, Illinois. This position will make significant contributions to Caterpillar’s engine business including the award winning C13D engine program by leading the execution of various IPSD engine lab tests for the C9-C18 engines such as Mounted Equipment Resonance (MER) test, piston temperature test, engine lube system performance test, etc.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Hosts pretest meetings to understand the test scope, objectives, passing criteria, gauge map, test cycles and other test execution related details.

  • Works with the mechanics and technicians to run the tests and collect the test data.

  • Analyzes test data and presents results.

  • Reports issues regarding the design or manufacturing. Ensuring design acceptance and manufacturing readiness.

  • Participates in the adoption of new technologies and processes to achieve greater efficiency, cost reduction and quality improvement.

  • Plans and improves testing procedures and operations to make the test more reliable, efficient, and cost-effective.

  • Technical Excellence: Working Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.

  • Project Management: Working Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.

  • Product Testing: Working Knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques, and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing.

  • Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Working Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools, and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.

Top candidates will have:

  • Master’s degree in an accredited Engineering or Materials Science

  • 3 years of firsthand engine testing experience

  • 5 years of experience in product development

  • Engine structure durability knowledge

  • Strong analytical skills
