Hours:

This is an overnight position. Typical hours are Monday - Friday from 11pm - 7:30am with alternating Saturdays.

Job Purpose/Overview

Specimen Processors are responsible for receiving, preparing, and organizing samples for laboratory analyses. They handle most incoming samples within the department and ensure accurate documentation and storage. Additionally, they assist with various support activities, including maintaining supply inventory, cleaning workstations, and managing supply shipping and receiving.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lives and exemplifies the Five Principles within self.

  • Receive and prepare samples for laboratory analyses.

  • Accurately process standard requisitions at specified rates for different forms.

  • Prepare specimens for testing by entering patient data, labeling samples, and dividing them into smaller portions, as necessary.

  • Organize samples for distribution throughout the lab, including sorting for various types of testing.

  • Scan tubes into storage racks and enter specimen data into the database for accuracy verification.

  • Handle various specimen types, including urine, blood, feces, and biopsies.

  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and organization of the work area, restocking supplies as needed.

  • Perform post-production duties such as inventory management, record-keeping, and shipping and receiving.

  • Assist with administrative tasks such as answering calls and maintaining logs.

  • Seek guidance from senior peers for non-complex tasks and adhere to lab policies and procedures.

  • Other job duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • 2-to-4-year degree in science-related field preferred.

  • Prior experience in a laboratory setting preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Attention to detail.

  • Ability to organize tasks efficiently and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a team setting.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Positive attitude and willingness to adapt to changing priorities and challenges.

  • Basic mathematical skills, with interpretive and analytical capabilities.

  • Strong data entry skills

  • Typing proficiency with a score of 85% or better on a typing test.

  • Proficiency in personal computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Office applications

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Stationary Position- must be able to remain in a stationary position for up to 2 hours.

  • Constantly operates a computer and other lab equipment accurately and efficiently.

  • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch

  • May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • The ability to observe details at close range.

  • Proficiency in the English language which allows for participation in team meetings, accurate entry of data into company systems and understanding of written directions.

  • Extended hours may be needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The associate will work in a Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present that are mitigated by the mandatory use of PPE.

  • Works under close to moderate supervision.

  • Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from the department supervisor.
