Description:

The Public Works Department provides daily services integral to the community. The mission of the department is to provide quality services with commitment, courtesy, and pride. The City of Palo Alto Public Works Department has an exciting opportunity for an individual interested in being a Facilities Painter. The Facilities Painter, who works in the Facilities section of Public Works, performs a variety of skilled painting tasks in City facilities. They will be responsible for interior and exterior painting project, graffiti removal, and all other related work as required to maintain City Facilities in a safe and efficient condition.

This is a journey-level painter position. Employees will receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of operating procedures and policies. Strong skills are required in organizing, prioritizing, planning, purchasing of materials and equipment for all assigned projects and work orders.

The incumbent will be part of a 13-person skilled Facilities team who are responsible for maintaining a very diverse group of buildings that range from Fire Stations, Community Centers, Libraries, Theaters, Parking Garages, Jr. Museum and Zoo, Interpretive Centers, Swimming Pool Complex, Art Center, and multi-story office type buildings. Essential Duties:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responds to request to work overtime or be on stand-by when conditions warrant and directed by management.

  • Performs assigned weekend and holiday standby duties to respond to emergencies as scheduled by management.

  • Uses basic knowledge of UBC regulations and requirements.

  • Works in association with any of the other crafts (electrician, carpenter, or technician) when conditions, schedule, or workload warrants or as directed by management.

  • Inspects work sites to take dimensions, layout work, and estimates materials required.

  • Maintains field work orders, service calls, and logs as directed by management.

  • Prepares surfaces of sheetrock, wood, metal, concrete, and masonry; applies prime and finish paints, varnishes, lacquers, and other covering materials (such as wallpaper) with brush, roller, or spray gun.

  • Refinishes furniture such as desks, chairs, tables, and bookcases.

  • Removes or covers up graffiti.

  • Mixes and matches paints; recommends blending, harmonizing, and contrasting colors.

  • Handles complaints and answer question from City departments and the public, as necessary.

Related Functions:

  • Attends various trade and safety related training classes as assigned by management.

  • Attends safety meetings as directed by management.

  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:

  • High school graduate or GED preferred.

  • Attainment of journeyperson-level proficiency in all around painting work which is normally attained after completion of an accredited four-year apprenticeship program.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License

Ideal Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles and methods of interior and exterior painting.

  • Knowledge of product and methods used for graffiti removal and cover up.

  • Knowledge of safe work practices and safety regulations pertaining to the work, including the use of personal protective equipment.

  • Knowledge of basic mathematical computation.

  • Skills in the use and maintenance of trade tools, and materials.

  • Ability to operate a computer to enter and secure information.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with others and to assimilate and understand information, in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.

  • Ability to operate City vehicles observing legal and defensive driving practices.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work.

  • Ability to operate boom and scissor lifts.

  • Ability to work effectively at remote locations without direct supervision, using initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
