Job Summary and Qualifications

The Speech Therapist provides high-quality, patient-centered care by developing and conducting individualized therapy programs for patients with communication, cognitive, and/or swallowing impairments. As a member of the health care team, the Speech Therapist performs comprehensive patient assessments and establishes appropriate treatment goals. The Speech Therapist serves as an educator to patients, families, students and colleagues.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Rehabilitation Services, the Speech-Language Pathologist is responsible for evaluation, identification and treatment of disorders of speech, language, voice, cognition and swallowing. Services are provided to patients on the medical, skilled nursing units, and outpatient therapy department. The speech language pathologist will provide compassionate treatment and promote an environment of excellent customer service. The Speech/Language Pathologist will have the responsibility for maintaining standards of professional and ethical practice in the provision of speech/language pathology services.

What you will do in this role:

  1. Confers with patients and families regarding discharge planning; i.e. patient’s level of physical independence and other details of required care.

  2. Directs activities of Speech Therapy Students or Clinical Fellow as appropriate.

  3. Discusses treatment plans and patient progress with physicians and members of the health care team and recommends alterations to the treatment plan when considered advantageous to therapy purpose. a. Reviews patients progress with other members of the patient care team. b. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

  4. Ensures implementation of operational standards which promote the maintenance of patient rights including: 1. Informed consent. 2. Identification and reporting of any suspected patient abuse. 3. Treatment processes. 4. Maintenance of patient confidentiality. 5. Ethical considerations. 6. Handling of patient complaints.

  5. Establishes an effective rapport with patients; interacts with them in a considerate and supportive manner. Responds to questions appropriately.

  6. Evaluates assigned patients, gathering data from a variety of sources, such as patient records, interviews, observation and team members.

  7. In accordance with patient's assessment and physicians prescriptions, develops treatment plans for assigned patients including specific goals and activities. 1. Re-evaluates and modifies plan at periodic intervals and as necessary. 2. Treats assigned patients and guides individual patients in selection of appropriate activities. 3. Leads specialized activities.

  8. Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports and other such reports.

  9. Properly administers patient treatments according to evaluation results and parallel to treatment plan, as indicated by patient progress, adherence to departmental procedures and proper application of all skilled techniques.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology or Communication Disorders.

  • Current Certificate of Clinical Competence from The American Speech-Language Hearing- Association. Post CFY

  • Current Texas State License in Speech-Language Pathology.

  • Current BCLS Certification Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date

Experience:

  • Acute care experience required, outpatient experience a plus

  • New grads with acute care clinical rotation experience will be considered; must be post CFY

  • Wound care a plus

  • Must be able to work days and rotating weekends
