Department: Cashier

Reports to: Front end manager or MOD

Summary: Sells groceries, food and products to customers. Handles all money transactions with customers. Collects shopping carts from parking lot and cart stall and return them to their storage areas.

Maintains cleanliness and safety of the register areas and lobby.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Displays excellent customer service skills by acknowledging customers as they enter the department and checkout area.
  • Informs the Monitor and/or Front-End Manager of all customer complaints
  • Takes cash, checks, charge or credit card payments accurately from customers according to established procedures. Returns correct change to customers by counting it aloud.
  • Bags products appropriately for customers.
  • Collects shopping carts from parking lot and cart stall and returns them to their storage areas as requested by the Monitor and/or Front-end Manager. Collects shopping baskets and returns them to their holders.
  • Periodically cleans their register runway.
  • Assists in maintaining the standards of cleanliness and store appearance, and safety established by Burkholder's Market by dusting weekly, cleaning and straightening their register area daily and restocking supplies as needed.
  • Report non-scanning items to the Monitor and/or Front-end Manager.
  • Ensures proper care in the use of POS and all other equipment; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Close coolers and freezers, shutting off lights where appropriate
  • Performs other duties as requested or required

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements as specified in the handbook and departmental attendance requirements.

Education/Experience: Less than high school education; or up to one (1) month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to customers and team members.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of money and merchandise. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest and percentages.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry our instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to observe, react quickly and adjust to different situations involving customers and team members.
