Appointment Information:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Phonology/Phonetics with a start date of August 16, 2024. This is a 9-month appointment, non-tenure track position, renewable yearly contingent on availability of funding, strong performance reviews and healthy enrollments in classes. Salary is commensurate with experience. The position involves teaching responsibilities of three courses per semester, covering undergraduate and graduate levels with emphasis on Phonology/Phonetics and related Linguistic topics.

We seek candidates who are passionate about research and teaching in Phonology, broadly conceived to include expertise in areas such as Phonological Theory, Bilingual Phonology, L2 acquisition of Phonology and Phonetics, Sociophonetics, and Computational Phonology. A Ph.D. in hand or ABD status in Linguistics or a related field with specialization in Phonology, is required by the appointment start date. Candidates who do not yet have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment may be appointed at the rank of Instructor. After the candidate obtains the Ph.D., the appointment will be changed to Visiting Assistant Professor.

Candidates must have a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching, potential for excellence in research and commitment to a diverse and inclusive environment.

Preference will be given to candidates with additional expertise in areas such as Second Language Acquisition, Bilingualism, Prosody, Acoustic Phonetics, Articulatory Phonetics and/or Formal/Computational models of language.
